"Let no one cheat you of your reward, taking delight in false humility and worship of angels, intruding into those things which he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, and not holding fast to the Head, from whom all the body, nourished and knit together by joints and ligaments, grows with the increase that is from God." (Colossians 2:18-19)
This passage warns us to be aware of deceit and false teachings and that it is important to hold fast to Christ. It says that the body of Christ, which is His church, needs to be knit together by joints and ligaments. We know that what makes us to be part of the body is Christ. He is the one who distributes the various gifts to the believers. What is also very important is that the parts of the body need to be knit together by the joints and the ligaments. This represents our communion with each other. If the hand is not knit together with the forearm and the arm, it cannot be used to perform its full function. We fulfill our full function and purpose when we are knit together. Faith is personal, and Christ works in us for that, but to bear fruit and really fulfill the purpose of His kingdom is possible when we are together with one purpose, which is His kingdom. That’s why God created the church. That’s why an example of a body is given to us in the Scripture. We need to seek genuine faith and unity to bear fruit and fulfill God’s purposes. It is not only visiting a church important; it is also seeking communion with others. Another passage in Ephesians talks about the same topic.
“but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ— from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.” (Ephesians 4:15-16)
This passage talks of growth in Christ. This is the way we grow—when we are joined and knit together. This is how the body grows. This is the way to be no longer children tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, as v. 14 of Ephesians 4 talks about.
